Seven founders met in November 1922 to create a private, independent lawn bowling club. The Fernleigh Lawn Bowling Club had its first official meeting at Elizabeth Park on June 20, 1923. The club aimed to find a place of its own.

The Lancaster Road location was purchased and developed in 1923. After construction of the green, the club was formally opened on August 20, 1925, with over 50 teams from around the U.S. taking part in a tournament and festivities to mark the occasion..

In the early years, the “Fernleighs” gained a reputation as very fine bowlers, competing with other clubs within a weekend’s driving distance. They took several trophies and titles against clubs in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York.
Fernleigh started as a men-only club, but in 1941, a Women's Auxiliary was formed and brought lots of improvements. The women also enjoyed friendly matches with other clubs. In 1995, women became full members and now join in all club activities and leadership alongside men.
Today, members include couples and singles of all ages, with both bowlers and social Associates. We host tournaments, casual games, and fun gatherings. Everyone helps care for the clubhouse and green. We value Fernleigh’s history and love working together as a community.
Though Fernleigh is still private, we’re happy to welcome anyone curious about this fun and challenging sport.
